2009 was an absolutely inspired year for PF&ED. We excitedly designed weddings full of crystals, galore, florals, and much much more. It was a year of glamour, fun, colors, and thank the lords for massive amounts of lighting. Every wedding we decorated was more enjoyable and unique then the one before, from the Tiffany Themed Wedding, to the Enchanted Forest, to the Winter in Wonderland, to the Traditional Indian.

As I reflect upon 2009 - this year was surely a year of amazement!!

That being said - for me 2010 will be even more inspired ! We plan on taking our designs to higher heights coming up with ideas that have never been done before. Nothing else can compare to the wonderments we have planned for our 2010 clients! ! ! ! ! !

We are back today featuring the heavenly wedding of Reema and Jigar. Planned and executed by Working Brides, this reception does not disappoint. I have a *designer-crush* on the gals over at Partyland Flowers & Event Décor because this reception is striking meets elegant all tied up with an ethnic bow. It is pretty spectacular.

Some more details from Sachi over at Partyland : we created a 10' chandiler in the middle of the reception room, we also created 5' tall centerpieces that were flowers made into the shape of a pineapple, we uped the anty and hung roses off her mandap so they looked as though they were floating in air, we created a stage decor for the reception that reached the ceiling and most enjoyably we created something that had never been created before!

Monograms - a great way to make your event look sophisticated!

I love the use of monograms - whether as a bright design on your dance floor - a little reminder on your cocktail napkins or even a beautiful swirly designed letters on your invitation - whatever the case may be . . . monograms are an absolutely lovely way to sophisticate your event!

One of my brides this past weekend Sonia was open minded when I suggested we have have monogram labels made to enhance her favors - she also has some on her cake topper, and her dance floor and her menu cards - all in all everthing looked well put together!

See below for some unique color pallets.When I was in India - especially when I was on a train from Delhi to Punjab I saw the most beautiful rural moments - four women walking into a water basin to clean clothes - each one wearing the most beautiful colored dupata (scarf) on her head each one in different colors. It was a beautiful sight to withhold - I realized how many colors that are unique can go together to create the most perfect event. So Don't be so Afraid of color - weddings no longer have to be white or red and Maroon, they can be fun and beautified by color!

Iphones go Weddings!

I love my Iphone - even though it runs out of batteries in three hours and sometimes goes blank for no apparent reason which scares me until I hook it up to a computer and walla it starts working again.

As in any relationship - its a bit temper metal. That being said - I just discovered that Iphone Applications have gone Weddings. One is a funny planner that predicts things for the future (hey an organizer that's also psychic- how can you go wrong ;-)).

The Second is a countdown to the wedding - you probably don't need a countdown - but it might be helpful with Anniversaries and Grooms for the future!

Ok, I have seen a lot of engagement shots in the time I have been decorating for Partyland Flowers and I have to say I have never seen engagements shots that were so like the couple -

Arti and Gautum are a bollywood movie - they stroll through the side walks singing to each other in yes can you believe it - Hindi .... and have a romantic view on everything - when I saw these pictures taken by Jenn Link I was impressed - I can't imagine images that personify this couple better!

As you may have read to my delight a Partyland Flowers & Event Decor kid is getting married - which also means I get to have my way in everything ;-).

Ok thats not completely true - brides will be brides even when they are related - but that being said I have been very lucky that Arti and Gautum have let me have my way in a few things.

One thing I always tell couples are to put inspiration boards together - even if we don't get everything into the board at least your designer has an idea of what your vision is - there is nothing more grand then getting your vision to become reality. Seeing little details that you love at your wedding it makes everything so much more exciting. Maheen came to me last year and honored me when she entrusted me with her wedding - it was very exciting for me to meet a bride who wanted a different kind of wedding as much as I did. So we built her a completely custom stage decor just for her wedding with pieces being made in Morocco and wholesale things being shipped from Australia - it was an exciting venture.

Maheen recently emailed me saying "You guys did a wonderful job - so much more then I could have ever imagined" with a few fun pictures below and above - Maheen made a beautiful Princess Bride - with a Handsome Prince Groom - something truely out of a fairy tale.

Ok, I am finally back to being normal and getting my life back after one month of traveling from Paris to Delhi to Punjab back to Delhi only to go home three days later on a fourteen hour flight. The day I landed I packed up again for a week trip to Pheonix Arizona where I earned my Wedding MBA ;-), only to come back and go to VA Beach to check out a location for one of my favorite 2009 weddings! What a crazy month its been - I have to say its nice to be back home ;) completely inspired for the end of the year weddings and for one more year of amazing weddings!

Going to India is always amazing to me every year seems to be another year of traveling - the fusion of culture is so prominent - like my design style- a moment of fusion clarity was when I was each sushi on the streets of Delhi - the ironies just never end.

One brave couple let two intrepid Washongton Post Magazine reporters plan their nuptials.

Yesterday my cousin Neha the youngest of the PF&ED kids forwarded me this Washington article about two Post Writers who set out to slay the Wedding Industrial Complex (that would include me ;-))

The article was so funny it made my sides hurt - it was a much needed laugh I needed in the middle of the busiest wedding week of the year!

I recommend every bride to read this for a few laughs when things are getting tough in wedding world.

A PF&ED Kid is Getting Married Part1!

First of all - I have been very bad when it comes to my blog - so I want to send out an apology - wedding season simply took over my life this year, I promise to try to get better at maintaining it in the future.
Second - Partyland has been in existence since I was a tiny kindergartner but I wasn't the only Partyland kid who's wedding job was to make petals (it used to take me an hour with one rose - now I'm down to 5 seconds), there are four more kids who were also involved... all of us with our own specialities. Anywho, my cousin Arti is getting married in November and yours truly has taken over the wedding decor!
Chosing colors and design and inventing a brand new mandap just for this wedding has been very enjoyable ;-). That being said - I am not the only Partylander who's grown up with a sense of design so has Arti - with her mother being an Architect and her aunt (my mom) being a florist, Arti has grown up to be an extraordinary graphic designer!
As such she has designed her own invitations that are absolutely beautiful! After her wedding she plans to design other wedding folks invites as well, and let me say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree - her talent is obvious from her designs!

Every year PF&ED donates the earnings from one large wedding to Room To Read (www.roomtoread.org/) a charity that builds schools and libraries in rural areas of South Asia.

Today, I was humbled during a wedding decoration when I saw that the bride and groom asked their guests to donate money towards the bride and grooms favorite charity in lieu of gifts.

I thought to myself - what a great way to give back, by the way of your wedding. Not only can that only be a lot of good karma. But an amazing way to give back to the world.

The Tysons Ritz Carlton - The New Desi Wedding Venue

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of doing a walk through with one of my trend setting brides at the Tysons Ritz Carlton.

I was very happy to run into Jamie Shillinger the banquet manager with whom I had worked with last year on the Orange/Hot Pink Tented Wedding as well as Saleenas -Midsummer Night Dream Wedding at the DC Ritz Carlton. I also had the pleasure of making a new acquaintance Tina Nader - the sales manager.

I was very impressed with how in tune Jamie and Tina were towards ethnic weddings; with a greeting room for the Baraath, an in house Indian or Persian Chef, a lunch space with wine lessons for the day after the wedding, The Reception Ballroom that can fit up to a thousand people, day before load in for wedding vendors (music to my ears) and of course all other luxury customer services that I have never seen anywhere else.

I was surprised to hear that their prices are very competitive with other major Desi Wedding Venues. So, if you haven't found a great location for 2008 or 2009 this is one location that should be on top of your viewing list!

Enhance Your Table Numbers

Designing the perfect table top is never an easy task for any bride (which is why I am known as the interfering decorator, by me anyway ;-)). One of my favorite ways of table enhancement is by changing the table numbers provided by locations or caterers.

"Table Numbers" nowadays, no longer actually have to be numbers they can be locations visited, love sayings and even favorite flowers, of course if you are going to custom design your table numbers they should definitely be more attractive then the standard.

Most Locations have plastic table numbers that are stuck to tall silver stands. Unfortunately, these design travesties almost always manage to get in the way of anything beautiful i.e. the centerpieces!

The easiest way to avoid these centerpiece destroyers are by purchasing great frames that go with the look and feel of your decor. I personally am in love with frames that have a front and back both made of glass that way you can showcase your table number from either side of the frame.

To take this idea one step further, start by creating beautifully numbered cards that go with the theme and feeling of the event as well. The picture above is a table number created by one of my brides Ritu last year - the number and font she used really help in reflecting her Turquoise Peacock Theme.

Inspriation Board - What an Inspirational Thought!

When working on designing the Louie Vuitton Collection, Marc Jacobs usually sits in front of what he calls an Inspiration Board created by the "higher ups" - showcasing the style of what the new show should reflect. As he sits in front of the board for hours on end he then starts to design a collection introspective of the visions he has let marinate in him.

Yesterday one of my wonderfully discerning brides Mehan emailed me her inspiration board. It showcases her style completely - South Beach meets Peacocks in simple elegance with a touch of tradition thrown in - I would say. I loved the idea of a bride coming up with a board that show cases all her favorite design elements to help me ponder and come up with something that is cohesive of all her thoughts.

After nearly two years of the Partyland Flowers & Event Decor web site being out of commision - I am very very happy to announce that we are finally launching the new website on March 1st 2008!

The new PF&ED site represents some of my favorite 2005-2007 weddings with a few recognizable classics thrown in!

Please keep in mind our new website is only a small preview of our design style and our enourmous 21 year compilation. Another good thing to keep in mind is that we completely customize every single wedding we do and we have a huge array of decor outside of what is shown by the site especially not including all the things we custom design for clients who request couture decor i.e. 100% built for the client.

I hope you enjoy looking through our 70 pictures and up and be sure to see if our design style matches your own- although we are not limited to one style in any way.

I always think a web site is an extended version of a business card - looking at our site lets you know that we are good at what we do - the rest happens at the meeting like magic when we start designing your event from scratch based on your thoughts, ideas, and dreams with our expertise thrown in. (Sometimes I feel like a Wedding Design Psychiatrist - its all about understanding your design style and going from there!)

This week we recieved brand new things for the 2008 season. We have been unpacking boxes non-stop for three days - When will the madness end ;-)!

Almost all of new things are very exciting and have almost completely been designed and patented by PF&ED - personally I don't like having the same wedding as anyone else in fact one of my nightmares is walking into my wedding in someone elses ballroom!

I DO Magazine - Ranita & Sean

We were very happy to open I DO magazine this week only to find one of our favorite 2007 weddings featured in it!

Our bride Ranita was wonderful to work with, she chose to go with one of our vintage mandaps we had used years ago for her sisters wedding. The difference was that this time around we added a lot of modern twists. The Moroccan styled chairs the parents sat on were custom designed specifically for the grooms family since the bride expressed them to be somewhat taller then our usual family members. Another twist in this event were the garlands that were exchanged by the couple - instead of the usual red and white roses - we used large sage green chrysanthemums and ivory roses to create a unique pearl like effect on the garlands - keeping the florals unique and fresh to the colors of the wedding.

During the reception we had a lot of fun with the florals, the bride chose what I call happy flowers (exemplary of the bride herself) - between gerber daisies, multi colored orchids and unique colored spider mums.

The Bride even kept a very open mind about allowing us to surprise her with one very unique centerpiece on her table alone in order to give it a little distinction.

Inspirations

One of the best parts of my job is the moment inspiration hits -when it does its like a ton of bricks - obvious and heavy.

I always feel inspired during some part of the meeting as the client starts describing their event. As the meeting goes on I start to draw an idea based on the clients words and my own impression of their style. At some point during this process inspiration hits and then I come up with the perfect design that is something completely unique yet completely owned by the person who described their dream event.

The design that you (or in this case I) come up with is something in between what the client wants and has been dreaming of with a vagueness with many ideas of my own thrown in to complete the picture to a perfection.

As they say one picture can say a thousand words - as an event decorator I believe a picture, a poem, a book - can create a beautiful wedding with a thousand details.

For example a seasonal inspiration - Winter in Wonderland, or inspiration from a book -A Mid-Summers Night Dream, even become inspired from a color- Pink Passion.

One of my favorite inspiring moments was when I was showing a client pictures of my trip to Udaipur where we visited The Lake Palace- one of the most amazing locations I have ever seen. My bride exclaimed that she wished that she could have gotten married at that very same location.

I looked at her and immediately thought why not- so I designed her - her very own lake palace perhaps it wasn't in Udaipur but it was a lake palace never the less. The best part of designing this mandap was the huge picture India Abroad put of this mandap on the cover page of their Fusion Wedding Story!

My Dream Wedding

A question I most often get asked by clients and friends alike is to describe my dream wedding. The answer to this question changes with the seasons and as often as I design events (which is very often) - probably because in my mind I have already lived my dream wedding over and over again and will continue to do so for some time! Every event I design is one dream that I have always had somewhere in my mind - of course by adding in a clients specifications to my dream the event turns into something even more spectacular then my original concept!

My latest dream wedding is from the new Sex and the City movie - the minute I saw the trailer I knew I wanted to design a wedding based on what I had seen!

I am completely inspired by this picture . . . the wedding I dream that goes with this image is as follows -

A chic entrance with two tiered white pedestals with candles, pearls and large light pink and white floral arrangements, A beautiful aisle with cherry blossoms on square pedestals and square vases, A very square white stage decor with a hint of white, light pink and black brocade fabric, the Garlands or the bouquet would be made entirely with white peonies and pearls. And the reception would have beautiful white and pink shimmer overlays with lots and lots of candle light and sparkling crystal.

I can completely imagine this event already - now I just need the perfect bride who has a wedding like this in mind too!
